Biography (note)
  • Le carnaval (choreography and scenario, Michel Fokine; music, Robert Schumann; scenery and costumes, Léon Bakst) was first performed at a charity ball in St. Petersburg in February 1910, and was given its western European premiere at the Paris Opéra in May 1910 by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Waslaw [also spelled Vaslav] Nijinsky danced the role of Harlequin at this premiere. As seen in these prints, his costume incorporated the lozenge pattern traditionally worn by the character Harlequin in the commedia dell'arte.
  • Ernst Oppler, 1867-1929, was a German painter and printmaker. The Ballets Russes became one of his favorite subjects beginning in 1912, and he made numerous drawings and etchings of the performances he attended in Berlin, where he made his home. He portrayed many stars of the Russian ballet, among them Anna Pavlova, Waslaw Nijinsky, and Tamara Karsavina.
