Description
2 paintings : gouache, ink?, color; 35 x 56 cm. or smaller.
Summary
Two paintings of Native American dancers, all apparently male, wearing masks that cover their heads. One painting depicts a line of six almost identically costumed dancers in black masks with striped horns; in their hands are bows and rounded objects that may be dance rattles. The painting labeled on the verso Hopi masked racers depicts four dancers, each in a different costume and mask corresponding to the handwritten notations on the verso: [unidentified], Humming bird, Chipmunk, Chicken hawk. All carry what appear to be weapons in their hands.

Note
  • Title devised by cataloger.
  • In the lower right corner of the painting of six dancers is the penciled name Ze You Mu, possibly signifying Tse-Ye-Mu [Falling Cloud], the pseudonym of artist Romando Vigil. The painting is on paper with a cloth backing.
  • The painting of four dancers is signed at lower right, but the artist has not been identified. Five lines of handwritten notations, some of them difficult to decipher, are on the verso: [illegible], Humming bird, Chipmunk, Chicken hawk, Hopi mask racers [?].
