- Biography (note)
- Although this drawing was received with the title Toumanova rehearsing Errante, this identification may be questionable. L'Errante, also known as The wanderer (choreography, George Balanchine; music, Franz Schubert) was created for Les Ballets 1933. The creator of this drawing, Pavel Tchelitchew, designed its set and costumes and co-authored the scenario with Balanchine. The ballerina Tamara Toumanova was a member of Les Ballets 1933 but is not known to have danced in L'Errante, although she performed in the ballets Mozartiana, Les songes, and Fastes. Possibly she participated in rehearsals for L'Errante but did not appear in the finished ballet. Alternatively, this drawing may indeed depict Toumanova but in another ballet.
- The Russian-born painter and stage designer Pavel Tchelitchew began to work in the theatre early in his career, and was admired for his innovative use of new materials and lighting effects. Among his first forays into the ballet world was Leonide Massine's Ode, presented by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1928. L'Errante (1933) was the first of several works he designed for George Balanchine.
- Richard Park Beard, 1925-2009, the former owner of this drawing, made his debut as a professional dancer with Ballet International in 1944, and subsequently danced with Ballet Theatre, Ballet Society, and the New York City Ballet. He also danced and choreographed for television and nightclub shows.
