- Description
- 1 drawing: ink, watercolor, one color; 20 x 31 cm., on mount 27 x 38 cm.
- Summary
- Representation of three figures in a file moving left. The figure at far left, which appears to be a woman, may be bare-headed or wearing a sort of turban. Her face is turned away from the viewer, and in her left hand is a rosary. The profile of the figure immediately behind her is partly visible, though its voluminous hood and dark robe conceals most of its face and body; it appears to rest its left hand on the woman's right shoulder. Behind it is a third figure, grovelling as it grasps the right hand of the hooded figure. A few curvilinear lines in the background suggest a desolate landscape.

- Biography (note)
- L'Errante, also known as The wanderer (choreography, George Balanchine; music, Franz Schubert) was created for Les Ballets 1933 in 1933. Pavel Tchelitchew, who designed its set and costumes, co-authored the scenario with Balanchine.
- The Russian-born painter and stage designer Pavel Tchelitchew began to work in the theatre early in his career, and was admired for his innovative use of new materials and lighting effects. Among his first forays into the ballet world was Leonide Massine's Ode, presented by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1928. L'Errante (1933) was the first of several works he designed for George Balanchine.
- Richard Park Beard, 1925-2009, the former owner of this drawing, made his debut as a professional dancer with Ballet International in 1944, and subsequently danced with Ballet Theatre, Ballet Society, and the New York City Ballet. He also danced and choreographed for television and nightclub shows.
