- Description
- 4 drawings (2 sheets): ink, graphite, wash, watercolor, b&w; 44 x 30 cm. or smaller.
- Summary
- Set and costume designs for George Balanchine's ballet Concierto de Mozart. One sheet contains images in two registers: at top is a set design in ink and wash, depicting a domed ceiling over a series of arches; at bottom are costume designs for eight female and male figures, some drawn in more detail than others; a graphite drawing of the set appears behind them. Another sheet contains an ink drawing of the set, resembling the graphite drawing on the first sheet. On the verso of the second sheet are costume designs for five male dancers, but it is uncertain whether these were also intended for Concierto de Mozart.

- Biography (note)
- Concierto de Mozart, also called Mozart concerto (choreography, George Balanchine; music, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Concerto no. 5 in A major, K. 219, for violin and orchestra); scenery and costumes, Pavel Tchelitchew) was created for the ballet company of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1942.
- The Russian-born painter and stage designer Pavel Tchelitchew began to work in the theatre early in his career, and was admired for his innovative use of new materials and lighting effects. Among his first forays into the ballet world was Leonide Massine's Ode, presented by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1928. He first collaborated with George Balanchine on L'Errante for Les Ballets 1933, and subsequently designed Balanchine ballets for various performing groups, among them the Metropolitan Opera, the Original Ballet Russe, and American Ballet Caravan.
- Richard Park Beard, 1925-2009, the former owner of these drawings, made his debut as a professional dancer with Ballet International in 1944, and subsequently danced with Ballet Theatre, Ballet Society, and the New York City Ballet. He also danced and choreographed for television and nightclub shows.
