Summary
An untitled painting dated 1930 depicts a dancing couple in bathing suits, surrounded by people in street clothes on what may be a boardwalk. The painting labeled "Las comparsas, Cuba, 1935" portrays a masked man and a dancing woman in front of two street musicians, the comparsas of the title. A drawing dated 1940 depicts a dancing couple in simple attire, possibly folk or modern dancers. A painting signed L'Engle '41 is identified on the verso as "12th night dance, Taos Pueblo, 1941." Set indoors, it portrays male dancers in Native American regalia, accompanied by drummers, and watched by an audience of men, women, and children.

  • Painters Lucy L'Engle and her husband William shared a lifelong interest in dance. Though based in Truro, Massachusetts, and highly influential in the cultural life of nearby Provincetown, they spent considerable time in New York City, where they chronicled dancers of the Jazz Age, sent their daughters to dance classes with Isadora Duncan, and drew members of Martha Graham's dance company. Their many travels included Cuba and New Mexico.
