- Biography (note)
- Romeo and Juliet (choreography, Antony Tudor; music, Frederick Delius; scenery and costumes, Eugene Berman) was first performed by Ballet Theatre in 1943.
- Eugene Berman, a painter and stage designer, was born in Russia, which his family fled during the Russian Revolution. He studied and worked in Europe, then immigrated to the United States in 1935. From the 1930s to the 1950s he designed sets and costumes for ballet and opera companies. His special interest in Italy, particularly in the art of the Italian Renaissance, enabled him to bring a convincing sense of the period to his sets and costumes for Romeo and Juliet.
- Richard Park Beard, 1925-2009, the former owner of this drawing, made his debut as a professional dancer with Ballet International in 1944, and subsequently danced with Ballet Theatre, Ballet Society, and the New York City Ballet. He also danced and choreographed for television and nightclub shows. While a member of Ballet Theatre, he danced the role of Paris, Romeo's rival, in Antony Tudor's version of Romeo and Juliet.
