- Description
- 1 print : lithograph, one color; 32 x 26 cm. +
- Summary
- Sheet music cover illustration in two sections. At left is depicted a ballroom filled with dancing couples, accompanied by musicians playing on a gallery. At right are three scantily draped women, probably nymphs or fairies, floating above a moonlit lake, with a statue of Eros on a pedestal to their left. A man in period costume observes them from the opposite shore, looking understandably awestruck; on the hill above him is a domed temple.

- Biography (note)
- The illustration at left presumably depicts the polka-mazurka, a ballroom dance that first became popular in the 1840s, which consisted of polka steps danced to the 3/4 time of the mazurka.
- The illustration at right may have been inspired by a ballet or theatrical work. The theme of a mortal man's encounter with the supernatural world, particularly in feminine form, was popular during the Romantic era. A prime example was Filippo Taglioni's ballet La sylphide (1832), which gave rise to many imitators.
