Summary
Depiction of a Pierrot-like figure, in white garments and cap, his face hidden by a black half-mask, carrying a woman, probably a ballerina, in a rose-colored dress. The name Bakst is written across the lower right corner. To the right of the letter K are part of the artist's signature and the date 1922.

Biography (note)
  • Possibly a trimmed dust jacket illustration for the publication Bakst (also known by the title Inedited works of Bakst), a portfolio of previously unpublished works by the Russian artist and stage designer Léon Bakst. It included ten printed plates and twenty photo-type plates hand-colored en pochoir by the atelier of Daniel Jacomet, accompanied by four essays. The portfolio was published in a limited edition of 600 by Brentano's, New York, in 1927.
  • Leon Bakst is probably best remembered today as a designer of sets and costumes for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. His designs included the iconic ballets Schéhérazade (1910), Carnaval (1910), and Le spectre de la rose (1911).
  • Pochoir prints are created by using stencils to add layers of colors over the base of a black-and-white lithographed image.
