Summary

Collection culled from a variety of sources, including books and illustrated periodicals, chiefly dating from the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. Some items have been trimmed of their captions and/or publication data, making identification of their sources difficult; some may be reproductions. The prints depict men and women who are exaggerated in face or physique, or captured in humorous circumstances as they engage in various social dances. In a print titled The dancing lesson, the participants have animal heads atop human bodies: the dancing master, who plays the pochette or small fiddle associated with his profession, is an antlered deer, with two female grasshoppers for his pupils. Among the artists represented in these examples are Frederick Barnard, Frédéric Bouchot, Hablot K. Browne, J.J. Grandville and Eugène Forest. The collection has been arranged alphabetically by title.
