- Summary
- Allen's memoirs, written in the form of letters to an imaginary correspondent, compiled and edited by his great grandson John C. Travis from copies of the original letters. Allen writes of life in New York City, the great fire, occupation of the city by the British during the Revolution, his work as a sailmaker apprenticing under James Leonard, his partnership with Thomas Hillson, his progress in sailmaking and business, the War of 1812, his services on behalf of the 10th ward on the Common Council, management of city affairs, activities as Chairman of the Croton Aqueduct Water Commissioners, politics, public funds for Roman Catholic schools, plans for a railroad from New York to Albany, and his various public offices and positions with charitable and other organizations.
