- Summary
- Simms, who was a secretary of the president of the radio station WAKR (Akron, OH), witnessed the beginning and progress of the career of Alan Freed, a disc jockey famous for promoting blues, country and rhythm and blues music on the radio under the name "rock and roll." She recounts many details related to his training by the station that pioneered rock music which was becoming the trend of that period, discusses Freed's legal scandal, methods used to popularize radio stations such as making dedications on the air and more. In contradiction with general opinion about Freed, she unfavorably assesses him as conceited, not bright, rather illiterate and inarticulate, and attributes his success to luck.
