  • Bishnu Dey was a renowned Bengali poet, prose writer, translator, scholar, and art critic. With the poets Buddhadeb Basu and Samar Sen, he helped shape the post-Tagore generation of Bengali poets. He was deeply influenced by Marxism, and published a poetry magazine which encouraged the creation of literature that would encourage political change. In the 1920s and 1930s, he was member of a young group of poets associated with Kallol (Commotion) magazine. He taught English literature at various Calcutta colleges, including Ripon College, Presidency College (1944–1947), Maulana Azad College (1947–1969), and Krishnanagar College. In 1965, he won the Sahitya Akademi Award for Bengali literature, and in 1971, the Jnanpith Award, India’s most distinguished literary honor.
  • John Bicknell Auden (1903-1991) was a geologist and explorer, and one of two older brothers of poet W. H. Auden. "His exploration and mapping (with three other climbers) [of the] high Karakoram region of the Himalayas was the subject of Eric Shipton's Blank on the Map (1938). In 1940 he was elected president of the Geological Institute of Presidency College, Calcutta. In 1945-51, he was engaged in investigating all the major dam sites, hydro electric projects, irrigation works and water supply schemes of India. In 1960 he joined the World Health Organization, where he worked until 1970. After retiring he lived in London, where he served for two years as vice-president of the Geological Society of London." -- From Wikipedia
  • Beauties of the West Bengali countryside, seen on a recent trip; West Bengali village life and the rearing of the village children; allusion to the "brown god" (i.e., the Mississippi River) of T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets; gentle criticism at Auden's wife's (Sheila) "faked Bengali."
