- Summary
- This edition of the complete catalogues of the State Hermitage Museum publishes all eighty-five examples of daguerreotypes owned by the Hermitage, many for the first time. The daguerreotypes are reproduced in most cases in their original frames, which shows the style of the period from the early 1840s to the early 1860s, when photography was competing with painted portraiture and still observing its conventions. In the shape of the pieces and in their presentation the Russian style shows the influence of French practice. New photographic techniques that permitted multiplying the image and were less prone to deterioration entailed the daguerreotype’s obsolescence, but the warm tones of its distinctive look and its primary position in photographic technology make these works valuable records of a momentous period in the history of visual art. Relatively few in number, the daguerreotypes in the Hermitage collection suffice to show the history of the form, and reveal the interests of early photographers. There are portraits, shots of works of art, and also rare examples of early landscape and interior photography. Works of the 1850s predominate, but the Hermitage also has examples of the very first years in the history of the daguerreotype. The iconographic aspect of the images is also significant: unique portraits of the principal aristocrat families of Russia such as the Bobrinskiis, Stroganovs, Sheremetevs, Shuvalovs, and Iusupovs. -- Summary written by John W. Emerich, Bronze Horseman Literary Agency.
