- Summary
- Author Max Wilk talks with actor Alfred Drake, who was the original Curly in the premiere Broadway production of "Oklahoma!" at the Theatre Guild. Drake describes the show's director's (Rouben Mamoulian's) relationship with the cast members and Agnes de Mille, and how theater director George Abbott and the Guild once had some doubts about Mamoulian's direction, but they changed their minds. Drake also talks about the show's and the Guild's financial problems, his own "letter contract" with the Guild, his contract with Columbia Pictures (a mistake), and his memories of Larry Hart (Drake starred in "By Jupiter") and Lee Dixon ("Will Parker"). At the end of the interview, Drake talks about his later collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein, planning a musical based on the play "Berkley Square", which was never meant to be, and the relationship between Rodgers and Hammerstein.
