Summary
BBC Radio reporter John Dunn interviews arranger/orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett and music director Lehman Engel for the upcoming BBC Radio production "Life and music of Richard Rodgers". Bennett talks about life as an orchestrator: the work load, how an orchestrator makes a piece of music come alive for the show and the audience, and how the job is satisfactory when the music is good. For example, Bennett discusses how Gertrude Lawerence's limted vocal range affected her songs for her performance as Ann Leeowens in "The King and I". Engel gives a historical analysis of American musical theater, revues and book shows by explaining various shows written by Rodgers, Jerome Kern, and George Gershwin. For example, Engel plays the main motifs and harmonies of Rodgers and Hart's song "Mountain greenery" on the piano (starts at 0:05, track 11), and he also explains how Rodgers's musical style adds to the "time, place and characterization" of each production. For example, Engel sings an excerpt from the melody of "Something wonderful", (starts at 0:04, track 13) analyzing the "speech-motif" of Lady Thiang's song, which mirrors her actual speech. Engel also analyses the characterization of the song "Bewitched, bothered and bewildered" (from Pal Joey). Finally, Engel illustrates how Rodgers evolved as a composer, in his work with both Hart and Hammerstein, and his latest creations.
