"The interesting and instructive 'Stories about the elephant,' which I am about to tell you, were written by a worthy clergyman of one of our beautiful little inland towns, and were printed in a somewhat larger book than this, several years ago ... I thought, if I could add these, and the 'Stories about whale-catching,' by the same gentleman, to my already long list of 'Teller's tales,' I should be doing you all an acceptable favor. I am happy in being able to tell you, that the author has very kindly given me permission to do so."--"To my young readers," title-page verso, signed by "Thomas Teller" (i.e., George Tuttle), and dated at Roseville Hall, 1845.
