Summary

Helen Hayes, known as "The first lady of the American Theater," speaks about educating people to be theatergoers by taking theater to colleges and small cities and not limiting it to New York ; the high cost of attending performances as one of the reasons people skip this type of recreation in favor of the less expensive ; the damaging effects of beginning an acting career as a child ; the circumstances that prevented her from studying acting professionally when she started her career ; what made her realize that she needed training (while acting in Pollyanna in 1917) in order to develop necessary acting techniques (voice, body movements, normal breathing ) the importance of which she strongly stresses to be as fundamental as natural talent and which allows an actor to sustain long parts and be good ; the ability of actors to perceive other persons' emotions and project and interpret them ; her method of working on a role and getting into character ; her opinion on the role of the director ; film and TV actors being deprived of the challenge and thrill of acting for live audiences and being restrained to short scenes or limited time ; "the process of elimination in acting in rehearsals," and more. She also expresses regret at not having education and training in classical theater as they are taught in Europe and the lack of repertoire theaters in this country.
