- Poitier, an American-born Bahamian actor and film director, speaks about the circumstances that prompted him to try acting; studying diction from listening to the radio; efforts to become more literate and enlarge his vocabulary; people who contributed to his success; his initial feelings for the theater; professional training; Stanislavsky's Method and his way of implementing it in his work; his way of preparing for a role (as an example he analyzes his part in the movie and play "A raisin in the sun"); the difference between gifted musicians and actors and those who can hypnotize with their gift of soul; the importance of recognizing one's gift and nurturing it; his many interests in various aspects of social issues; his approach to choosing a part; art that can relate to people of different backgrounds; preparation for a role in a film or on the stage; his opinion of the status of "a negro actor" and his/her prospects in the future; his idea of an actor's progress; the reason for losing interest in playing in works by Shakespeare and his admiration and passion for reading them, and the motive for his preference to work in Hollywood rather than in the theater.
