Summary
Oz, issue no. 28 (q.v. copy in the Berg Collection) - a.k.a. the School Kids Issue - led to the controversial obscenity trial in London of Richard Neville, Felix Dennis and Jim Anderson. Oz (published in Sydney, 1963-1967, and in London, 1967-1973) was a satirical magazine established in Sydney by editors Richard Neville and Richard Walsh and Australian artist-designer Martin Sharp. The first issue was published on April Fool's Day 1963. Oz featured social satire with humorous cartoons and other artistic material depicting politicians, royalty and prominent public figures in an irreverent fashion. Although articles of more serious socio-political intent were also featured, its anti-establisment profile quickly made it a target for censorship. After the publication of Oz issue no. 6 (Feb. 1964), Neville, Walsh and Sharp were charged under the Obscene and Indecent Publications Act and sentenced to jail terms with hard labor, which decision was overruled on appeal. Neville and Sharp left Australia for England, where they established Oz (London) in February 1967 (ceased publication 1973). The legacy of Oz's existence and the controversial School-Kids-Issue trial found expression in many David Hockney drawings, Caroline Coon's painting of the (nude) defendants, and the John Lennon and Yoko Ono's song "God Save Oz."
