Summary
Collection depicts aspects of the professional acting career of African American actor John Marriott, from the late 1930s to the 1970s. Marriott's professional career prior to the late 1930s is not depicted; and depictions of his personal life are limited. The collection consists of studio portraits of Marriott, mostly quarter and full-length poses and head shots, that were probably used for publicity purposes or to accompany resumés; group portraits showing Marriott with fellow cast members, acting colleagues and friends; scenes and publicity photographs from New York and other regional theatrical productions that featured Marriott; publicity photographs from his appearances on television programs and in commercials; publicity stills from some of Marriott's motion picture performances; a publicity still from a radio program; portraits of Marriott possibly as an artist's model and print advertisement model; and studio portraits, many bearing inscriptions, from actors and other entertainment figures. Among Marriott's theatrical performances depicted are "You Can't Take it With You" (ca. 1938), "The Little Foxes" (1939), "Free and Equal" (1942), "The Iceman Cometh" (1946), "The Respectful Prostitute" (1948), "Charleston 1822" (1948) and "Orpheus Descending" (1957). Motion pictures stills consist of "The Little Foxes" (1941), "The Joe Louis Story" (1953) and "The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell" (1955). Also included are publicity photographs, probably for television commercials, for Chesterfield Cigarettes, showing Marriott portraying the "Chesterfield Reporter" interviewing Ebony editor Era Bell Thompson, husband and wife radio show hosts Buddy Bowser and Sara Lou Harris, and United States Air Force Major Daniel "Chappie" James (ca. 1950s).
