Note
  • "Le prix est de 30 sols ... Avec approbation, & privilége du Roi." Approbation, dated April 10, 1770: page 59.
  • Ascribed to "M. Lantin" in the dedication, but in fact by Voltaire; see Barbier and other sources citied below. "La Sophonisbe 'réparée à neuf' est du reste tout entière l'œuvre de Voltaire"--Bengesco.
  • BN/BnF transcribes date of first performance in title as "samedi 15 février 1774." February 15, 1774 was a Tuesday; the first performance was in fact on Saturday, January 15, 1774.
  • First published in 1770 (A Paris : Chez la veuve Duchesne). For discussion of the earliest editions, see: Todd, C. Sophonisbe, éditions (In Voltaire. Works, 1968-, v. 71B, pages 26-37), 70P1, 70P1 (bis), 70P2.
  • Apparently a reissue of the sheets of the first edition (Todd 70P1), with a new title page, but with the text unchanged; issued on the occasion of the first performance. See BN/BnF. Some copies of this issue contain 5 cancels with several minor revisions; some have an errata leaf at end. Copies are also known containing the 5 cancels and the errata leaf, but with the original 1770 title page. See Todd 70P2 (Todd's transcription of the 1774 title page differs slightly from the above: omits most accents; omits "samedi"; omits mention of price).
  • NYPL copy: Text in original state (as in Todd 70P1).
  • Copy described by Bengesco (Todd 70P2 with 1770 title page, the 5 cancels, and errata leaf; BnF, Rés. Z. Bengesco-112) is available online via Gallica.
  • Printer's imprint from colophon.
  • Signatures: a⁴ b² A-C⁸ D⁶. Last page blank.
  • Woodcut title page vignette (Roman helmet), signed "B."; woodcut headpieces, signed "Beugnet" (one signed "B."); woodcut and ornamental tailpieces; ornamental rules.
