- Note
- The suit was occasioned by John Howe's publicly calling Samuel Russell a liar. The case turned on whether Russell had proposed an exchange of pulpits with Dr. Nathaniel Thayer of Lancaster. The incident was part of a larger controversy over whether Russell, an evangelical Congregationalist and a compromise choice for the Boylston pulpit, was fulfilling his agreement to make exchanges with Unitarian ministers.
