- The theater first opened Jan. 29, 1798, as the "New Theatre." It burned May 25, 1820 and was rebuilt and reopened Sept. 1, 1821. On Feb. 27, 1822, its name was changed to "Theatre." It was always known as the Park Theatre from its location in Park Row, fronting what eventually became City Hall Park.
