Biography
The Khmer Dance Project (KDP) was initiated by the Center for Khmer Studies in Siem Reap, Cambodia in 2008 in partnership with the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and with funding from the Anne H. Bass Foundation to document the dance heritage of Cambodia, specifically Royal Khmer dance, and help preserve the dance traditions of the Khmer people. Khmer dance was a seriously endangered art form under the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979) when many dancers and dance teachers were executed; now many of the survivors are elderly. The KDP, led by former dancer and scholar Suppya Nut, recorded rehearsals and performances of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia and conducted ca. 50 interviews with three generations of dancers, musicians, singers, choreographers and costume designers.
