Summary
Mikhail Baryshnikov and White Oak Dance Project perform Past Forward, a retrospective and celebration of Judson Dance. Live dance performances alternate with video sequences, created by Charles Atlas and narrated by Baryshnikov. The video details how Judson fit within the cultural landscape of the 1960s and includes a comparison of Russia and the United States. Stills and interviews bracket the performance of each live work, explained in part by its choreographer. Public participation is part of the program, as local dancers and community members take part in several works; one little girl runs and nearly trips across the stage during "Satisfyin Lover". Poor visual quality, with the exception of "Single Duet", in which the camera operator zooms in on Baryshnikov and Deborah Hay during the performance. This section, from 1:03:30 through 1:12:20, allows us to see the details - tiny gestures, facial expressions, lip movements - and allow for the most compelling view of this performance.
