- The Congrégation du Saint-Esprit et du Saint Coeur de Marie was a religious order rooted in ministry to Africa and freed blacks in the French West Indies. Between 1884 and 1885, the order published nine issues of L'Echo des missions d'Afrique de la Congrégation du Saint-Esprit et du Saint Cœur de Marie. The periodical contained stories of escaped slaves in Africa who made their way to the missions, where they were fed, cared for, educated, and baptized. The missionaries focused not on the exportation of slaves to European colonies, which had declined significantly by the 1880s, but on the issue of Africans enslaving other Africans. In addition to the personal stories of the missionaries and runaway slaves, the periodical also published essays devoted to the analysis of the institution of slavery as a whole. Overall, L'Echo des missions d'Afrique de la Congrǧation du Saint-Esprit et du Saint Cœur Marie offered compelling narratives as well as an overview of the institution of slavery in Africa in the 1880s.
