- Description
- 1 videodisc (95 min) : sound, color; 4 3/4 inches.
- Summary
- Alastair Macaulay, Robert Greskovic, and David Vaughan discuss the choreography, history, and artistic and cultural significance of the ballet Swan Lake. They begin by recounting their own personal histories with the work, describing the first time they saw it performed. Macaulay then explains the focus of the discussion. They will be examining the 1895 St. Petersburg choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov and breaking the work down as a 4 act ballet. Vaughan then gives a brief history of the 1895 production. As many of the clips are from films in the Victor Jessen collection held by the Library, Alastair Macaulay briefly explains Jessen's invaluable role in documenting mid-20th century ballet and the tedious process owing to limitations in the technologies of the day. Clips showing variations in iconic scenes as well as a photographic slideshow of costumed performers, costume design sketches, and set design sketches are shown and discussed by the panelists. They discuss themes in the production, the relatively new emergence of the "black swan" Odile in the latter half of the 20th century, set designs, characterizations, and costume design. Margot Fonteyn is featured in multiple clips shown during the event.
