- Medal Day at The MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire, is an annual celebration of the creative arts. Each summer hundreds gather at an outdoor ceremony on the Colony grounds to witness the presentation of the Edward MacDowell Medal to an artist who has made an excepcional contribution to American culture. Collected here are the Medal Day remarks of Robert MacNeil, given during his seventeen years as chairman of the Board of the Colony. Also included is the text of the Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy, which he delivered in Washington, D.C., under the auspices of Americans for the Arts, in 2007 during MacDowell's centennial year.
