- Babbitt speaks about a book by Marion Bauer "Twentieth century music" written in 1933 that cited musical examples from works by Arnold Schoenberg and the impression it made on him and his fellow composers; the influence of Schoenberg's music; the regretful state of serious contemporary music in the 30ths; the lack of living composers teaching composition and consequently absence of good music school during that time; orchestras founded during the depression and their repertoire; the group of American composers with whom he mingled; the change in the music culture in America with the influx of European composers who fled the Nazis such as Arnold Schoenberg, Igor Stravinsky, Ernst Krenek, Bella Bartok and others; American composers such as Aaron Copland, Roger Huntington Sessions, David Diamond, Roy Harris, Carl Ruggles and others; trends and tendencies that resulted from the association of American and European composers; composers who fell into oblivion and those who achieved professional success, and more.
