- National Music Lovers was conceived by Harry Scherman and Maxwell Sackheim during the economic downturn of 1921-22. With sales of full-priced records slumping, several cheap new labels had recently come on the market and were doing well. Scherman and Sackheim decided to launch their own inexpensive label, but with a twist, the records would be sold only by mail-order, in sets of eight, sent C.O.D. directly from the factory with ten-day return privileges. National Music Lovers, Inc., suspended operations at the end of 1927. In January 1928, a new label bearing none other than the New Phonic name commenced its catalog at number 1219, picking up precisely where National Music Lovers had left off.--Introduction.
