Summary
Walter Bishop recounts his early life and the influence of his father, the composer Walter Bishop; his career as a jazz pianist and various musicians who influenced his musical development and with whom he performed, including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, and others. He talks about playing with Charlie Parker and his introduction to Bebop. Also speaks about jazz technique and composition. Bill Evans referred to him as the most underrated jazz pianist in the world. Recites poems inspired by his colleagues. The interview is structured around Larry Ridley naming various jazz musicians and Bishop recounting his association with them and his impressions about their character and musical technique and their influence on him.
