Role of the artist; creative process; need for the writer to observe the world closely, not just his psyche; suspicious about “working class” movements because of Soviet influence; labor of U.S. soldiers in armed services compared to “Nazi labor policies”; on guard duty in the barracks “wearing blue peacoat, trousers, leggings, and bowcap, carrying a club and wearing a white belt, etc. I have to see that everyone is buttoned up, etc.”
