Summary
This recording contains the first paper presentations of Session 1 of the first National Congress on Women in Music (NYU, 1981): "Late 19th and early 20th century women composers in England". Three papers were presented by 1. Jane Marcus's "One's own trumpet: Ethel Smyth and Virginia Woolf", about the letters written between Smyth and Woolf during 1930-1941 when they were romanticially involved. (It eventually became a book). 2. Nancy Gisbrecht's paper, "An examination of the operatic environment in which Ethel Smyth composed and its effect upon her career", talks about Dame Ethel Smyth's operatic enviroment in both England and Germany, and her opera "The Boatswain's mate" (1914), as compared to Sir Charles Stanford's opera "The critic" (1915) and Frederick Delius's opera "A village Romeo and Juliet" (written in 1901; produced later). 3. Elizabeth Wood's "[Dame Ethel Symth:] Radicalism & respectabilbility" [not recorded on audio] about Dame Ethel Smyth, and 4. Dr. M. F. Brand's dissertation excerpt "Poldowski (Lady Dean Paul): her life and song settings of French and English poetry". The recording ended with a general survey report by Dr. Derek Hyde ["Women and music in nineteenth century England"].
