- Summary
- In the first paper "Maddalena Laura Lombardini Sirmen (c. 1750-after 1785)", Jane L. Berdes talks in depth about the composer's life and her works. The second paper, "The woman singer: Johann Adam Hiller's emancipatory contribution", Dr. Suzanne Beicken focuses on the period of exclusion of women singers as performers during the 18th century, thus using castrati for the high voices (a barbaric practice). The ban was only lifted when Johann Adam Hiller, who invented Singspiel and was known for his vocal instruction, insisted that ladies join the men on the stage. Two of his students were the legendary vocalists Corona Schröter and Gertrud Elisabeth Schmeling [Mara]. Two other famous female singers during this period in Italy were Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni. The last paper, "The life and keyboard works of Maria Teresa Agnesi, Milan (1720-1795)", Dr. Carolyn Britton talks about the family, works and life of composer Maria Teresa Agnesi, ending with her struggles after she married her husband.
