Clipping and miscellaneous material about Abernathy, Ralph; David Abernathy; clergyman and civil rights leader, drafted into the armed services and enlisted as Ralph David Abernathy. Served as dean of men at Alabama State and minister of a small congregation at Eastern Star Baptist Church in Demopolis, later at the First Baptist Church; became program chairman of the newly organized Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA); served as secretary-treasurer Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC); assumed the presidency of SCLC after the assasination of Martin Luther King Jr.; in the 1980s, he broke ranks with most black leaders to support Ronald Reagan’s presidential candidacy; died 17 April 1990 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States).
