- Biography
- Dancer, choreographer, and teacher, Vincenzo Celli was born in Salerno, Italy on May 4, 1900. At an early age, he immigrated to Chicago with his family. Inspired by seeing Vaslaw Nijinsky perform with the Ballets Russes during its only American tour, Celli later moved to New York City, working as an actor with the Washington Square Players. He began his dance career in 1918, returning to Italy where he studied with Enrico Cecchetti. In 1925, he married opera singer Marion Ivell. Celli appeared at La Scala in Petrouchka in 1926, becoming ballet master there in 1929. After the rise of fascism, he returned to New York City to teach ballet. Among his pupils were Agnes de Mille, Alicia Markova, Anton Dolin, and Jerome Robbins. From 1938 to 1940, Celli served as ballet master of the Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo. Celli died of a heart attack in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1988.
