- Note
- "The orcherd is an early fifteenth-century translation of the work perhaps now best known as The dialogue of St. Catherine of Siena"--Preface, p. v. This edition is based on British Museum (now British Library) Harleian MS. 3432, with variants from the two other extant manuscripts, St. John's College, Cambridge, MS. C 25, and Pierpont Morgan Library MS. 162, and occasional readings from Wynkyn de Worde's modernized recension in the first printed edition, London, 1521, with title Here begynneth the orcharde of Syon.
- The translation is from a Latin version of the work by St. Catherine, which was composed in Italian and translated into Latin by Cristofero Guidini and Stefano Maconi and in part by Raymund of Capua. Guidini's version, which is close to the Italian, is largely followed here. See: Preface, pages v-viii; see also Mary Denise, Sister. "The Orchard of Syon, an introduction," in Traditio, 1958, pages 269-293.
- In an envoy, the presumed translator refers to himself as "Dan Iamys" (page 421). "A reading of the text fails to bear out the assertion that 'Dane James' was the translator, or at least, the chief translator of the work"; someone by this name may have assisted the anonymous translator. See article by Sister Mary Denise, pages 291-293.
- Planned in 2 volumes (see page viii). Volume II was not published.
