Summary

• Seven chapters, the first of which introduces “Paula,” the narrator of six stories, in six chapters, each told to her by her Chicago working class and middle class woman friends. Each chapter bears the name of the storie's heroine.
• The women each represent a different ethnic group or social milieu which colors their respective stories : Sara Bach is Jewish, Mildred Carter a flapper, Francie MacDonald an Irish Catholic, Crystal Overton a showgirl, etc.
