Summary
  • Typed mimeograph with autograph signature facsimile at bottom of page.
  • Condemns the electronic masking of Abbie Hoffman’s T-shirt on the Merv Griffin television talk show, which was illustrated with elements of the U.S. flag. The censorship is compared to the “treatment accorded [Black Panther] Bobby Seal [sic] in Chicago by Judge Hoffman.”
  • Presents six demands: “censorship like that against Brother Abbie stop now,” and the President of CBS Television, Robert Wood (d. 1986), debate Hoffman on prime time, with Marshall McLuhan as debate moderator”; “the uncensored version of the Good Friday Merv Griffin show be aired forthwith,” with the “advertizing proceeds [to be] turned over to the Combined Defense funds of the Chicago Conspiracy and Panther 21 trials”; the “immediate use” of C.B.S.’s network by “our people […] during hours of non-viewing” to be used on an multi-city “splitscreen hook-up”; the licenses of the major networks be rescinded and given to “the people;” C.B.S. should produce “programs debating the laws which prohibit T.V. in the courts and in the public assemblies of government.”
  • Presents four protest actions that will be taken, including “An immediate boycott of all Columbia Records for one month.”
