- Summary
- This video is a dance/music/video-photo work (part of BAM 2011 Next Wave Festival) written by Haitian-American composer-violinist DBR. In his words: "The idea for 'Symphony for the dance floor' began with the tragic events surrounding the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti ... [my father] predicted there will be dancing and singing in the streets ... days later, Anderson Cooper was reporting to us the Haitian people dancing and singing from the streets of Port-au-Prince. I understand now that those expressions were acts of defiance in the face of tragedy. As a composer, my initial thought was to create some large, solemn requiem for Haiti. But as a Haitian-composer, I realized that that would be wrong. What was needed was a piece that was vibrant, moving, and alive!" This piece also includes some short arrangements of "My country, 'tis of thee" (while photos shown on a screen) and "Amazing grace", played by DBR.
