- Summary
- In New York, after conducting one of two concerts as part of the "Music in May" festival at Avery Fisher Hall "Music in May" (on May 4th), Neville Marriner, a renowned British conductor and at the time, music director of the Los Angeles Symphony orchestra, speaks with Sherman, the WQXR radio journalist, about his upcoming concert with the pianist Earl Wild following day; the programs and repertoires of his recordings and concerts; his moving on from conducting chamber orchestras to symphonies orchestras and operas; American and British instrumentalists; and shocks Sherman by revealing that the orchestra he founded and that bears the name of the church St. Martin-in-the-Fields (Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields) never records and seldom performs in the church because of its very bad acoustics and noisy location (Trafalgar Square in London). This program includes excerpts from Marriner's recordings with this orchestra (finale from Symphony C in major by Bizet, prelude to "Birds" by Respighi, and excerpt from the overture to "The siege of Corinth" by Rossini) and several radio commercials and announcements, and lasts approximately 48 minutes (the entire 1st part and 11 min. of the 2nd part). The remaining 20 minutes is a conversation between the organist Rollin Smith and 2 unidentified people: a man and a woman. Smith scrutinizes organists, organ music and organs; points to difficulties of organ playing in comparison to piano playing and being at the mercy of unknown and often inferior instruments; expresses his wish to see churches consolidate and organize organ recitals; and more.
