  • Six reviews of Not by Bread Alone by Adina Tal. In this presentation by Tel Aviv's Nalaga'at Theater, 11 professional performers who are both blind and deaf , and whose dialogue is conveyed to the audience via supertitles and sign language, begin the play seated at long tables, kneading dough that is then placed in working ovens. A pleasant bakery aroma fills the theater, and at the end of the piece, the audience is invited to break the resulting bread with the cast onstage. The purpose of the play is to try to make the audience feel how it feels to be both deaf and blind. Critical reaction was mixed when the production opened Jan. 16, 2013, at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, New York University, 566 LaGuardia Place, New York, N.Y.
