Clipping and miscellaneous material about Brown, Willie; Willie Lewis Brown Jr.; politician, mayor; born 20 March 1934 in Mineola, Texas, United States; active member of NAACP (1952); received degree in political science from San Francisco State College (1955); received doctor of law degree from Hastings Law School (1958); established his own firm and was active in the civil rights movement; ran for a position in the state assembly, was defeated (1962) but won (1964); became an instrumental figure in Democratic Party (1960-1970s); delivered a powerful speech at the Democratic National Convention (1972); elected speaker of the assembly and served as speaker until (1995); notorious for his expensive suits and for driving around San Francisco in expensive cars; fashion magazines praised him, Playgirl named him one of its ten sexiest men, played a part in the movie The Godfather: Part III; elected mayor of San Francisco (1996-2004).
