- Summary
- This historical inquiry on a selected double-decade, 1925-1945, examines the dance events included in the Summer Concerts Series at Lewisohn Stadium, disclosing nineteen dance ensembles in ninety-five concerts before audiences totalling well over a million people. Spectators' fees (ten cents to $1.10) from the Series' inception to its end remained amazingly minimal permitting those least able to afford high prices to see the best performers in a variety of dance forms in an era when that art was beginning to gain a place in American culture. Minnie Guggenheimer and her staff designed and financed the Series principally to attract music devotees. The enormous open-air Stadium frequently accommodated 17,000 people and another 5,000-10,000 "standees" when throngs of people oversold events such as the Denishawn Dancers, Fokine Ballet, Lily Pons, and Frank Sinatra. Dance held its own in attracting diverse populations; during at least twenty seasons its steady attendance contributed to the fiscal survival of the Series. The 1925-1945 dance evenings evident in the Summer Concerts Series are a microcosm for tracing developments and trends in dance criticism, dance sponsorship, and dance management as dance emerged as an American art form.
