Summary
In this overview of Roman agriculture, Werner Tietz discusses the plants and animals that were the most important for the Roman food supply, economic and social aspects of farming, religion and the rites of gods associated with agriculture, and Roman agricultural implements. He gives an account of farming that includes the small farms of simple farmers, the landed estates of senators during the Republic, and the vast state-owned domains of the Empire, contrasting the lives of slaves, tenant farmers, and laborers with those of the Roman elite.
