- Note
- “Richard Woodward Seaver (December 31, 1926 – January 6, 2009) was an American translator, editor and publisher. Seaver was instrumental in defying censorship, to bring to light works by authors such as Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet, Henry Miller, William S. Burroughs, Hubert Selby, Eugène Ionesco, E.M. Cioran, D.H. Lawrence, Jack Kerouac, Robert Coover, Harold Pinter and the Marquis de Sade. […] In 1959, Seaver went to work for Grove Press, where he eventually rose to the position of editor in chief.”—From Wikipedia.
- Autograph letter, signed, Dec. 12, 1961, 1 p.; thanks Seaver for generous letter of reference.
- Typed letter, signed, Aug. 23, 1962, 1 p.; recommends two manuscripts by unidentified authors to Seaver, though at end of letter notes they are “silly” and “ineffectual” when compared to his own “unpublished Candy”: And When They Killed Him and Brouillon d’un Borgeois (by François Billetdoux, published by La table Ronde, 1961); and says he is attempting to have “another Frenchie” published at “Esk” (i.e., Esquire) – Alain Robbe-Grillet’s short-story “The Secret Room.”
- Typed letter, signed, Oct. 23, 1962, 1 p.; asks Seaver to send “the pieces of mine you have” to a publisher named William Becker; will not preclude Grove Press from publishing his novel, since Becker interested only in “the odd pieces”; must be firm with “Dumb-bell fell.”
