Note
  • The first full-length biography of Shaw.
  • The typescript of this work, housed in the Berg Collection, and purchased with this volume, was corrected and emended by Shaw, in pencil, in over 100 places, including more than 600 words added to chapter ten, “Unpleasant Plays,” for which typed transcriptions (transcriber unidentified) were laid-in.
  • The published text differs from the typewritten text, though it incorporates many of Shaw’s emendations. Shaw corresponded frequently with his American biographer Henderson throughout the writing of the work. In his emendations and notes, Shaw corrected biographical errors and challenged Henderson’s critical readings of the plays.
