- Tobi Tobias introduces the New York & Company radio program with Leonard Lopate; Leonard Lopate introduces the Merce Cunningham Dance Company season at City Center, Carolyn Brown, and David Vaughan; Carolyn Brown speaks about meeting Merce Cunningham and John Cage with her husband Earle Brown while in Denver, Colorado; David Vaughan speaks about meeting Cunningham and Cage at the School of American Ballet, as well as seeing some of their performances for the first time; Brown speaks about being invited by Cunningham to the 1953 summer session at Black Mountain College and how this experience inspired her to become a dancer; she speaks about several of the works they performed at Black Mountain that summer, including Suite by chance (1953); touring in the Volkswagon bus, especially the conversations between Cage and David Tudor about theory and chance, and Cunningham's quiet demeanor; being drawn to the artistic ideas of Cunningham and his collaborators; how she adjusted to dancing independently of the accompanying music; Vaughan speaks about his first impressions of Sixteen dances for soloist and company of three (1951) and how this work inspired him; they speak briefly about Vaughan's work as a Company administrator and his recently published book, Merce Cunningham: 50 years (New York, Aperture); Brown compares the early reception and reviews of the Company in New York versus that of Europe; Brown speaks briefly about a recent reconstruction of Summerspace (1958); Lopate announces the upcoming performances at City Center; Vaughan speaks briefly about performing as a vocalist in How to pass, kick, fall, and run (1965).
