Summary
The court ordered the suppression and public burning of seven works: De l'esprit, by Helvétius; Le pirrhonisme du sage, by Louis de Beausobre; La philosophie du bon sens, by Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, marquis d'Argens; La religion naturelle (Poème sur la loi naturelle), by Voltaire; Lettres semi-philosophiques du chevalier de ** au comte de **, by Jean-Baptiste Pascal; Étrennes des esprits forts (a new edition of Pensées philosophiques, by Denis Diderot, with an appended anonymous "Epître philosophique en vers à un philosophe"); and Lettre au R.P. Berthier, sur le matérialisme, by Gabriel François Coyer. In addition, the seven volumes published to date of Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers were referred to a panel of experts for further examination and ordered suppressed in the interim.

  • Woodcut headpiece; woodcut pictorial initial C, signed Papillon. Two cuts used for the headpiece, probably corresponding to two different settings of type; one cut is signed Papillon f. and has a central motif of three fleurs-de-lis in a border of clouds and flames; one is signed Cotte and has a central motif of three fleurs-de-lis on a shield with a royal crown.
  • New York Public Library copy has the Cotte headpiece.
